To My Beloved

So today I uploaded my latest short film, To My Beloved. It’s a romantic comedy of sorts but with my own special twist on the concept.

I’m really rather pleased with it given the time it took and the efforts to get some of the shots right despite awful weather causing problems with the light and background noise. It’s one of those problems that always crops up when you’re filming – too much rain and you lose both light and sound because the noise simply turns everything into a mess. Still, those are the breaks and you do what you can with what’s available.

I wrote this film in an evening after getting an idea for a twist ending and building the rest of the story around that. I had an image in my head of the final scene and I’m happy to say I was able to get close to the mental image with the final product. It helps that I’m intimately familiar with the limitations of using Second Life for machinima and therefore wasn’t going to try to make anything too ostentatious. It would have detracted from the story to do anything too fancy anyway.

Jen keeps asking me if she’s overacting in these films but to be honest, I thought she played her part rather well. As this is something of a ridiculous comedy, I was looking for a performance that’s a little over-the-top. Under the circumstances, I think she did rather well. For my part, I think I was a little understated in this film and I’m going to have to work on making my performances a little more nuanced, otherwise I just come across as dull and wooden.

Still, that’s what these films are for really: practice, so I can get better at this. In that respect, I’m really pleased with what we put together in this little film. I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.
