Languages

The Kingdom of Kohlandia has three official languages; with one spoken throughout the kingdom and the others spoken in smaller groups of Kohlandian citizenry, or at specific civic functions.

English

English is the language du jour and is spoken throughout Kohlandia; with well over 90% of Kohlandia’s citizens speaking the language fluently. It is the language the national media uses; and the language of choice for The Daily Micronationalist, which operates from Kohlandia’s capital, Dunhallow.

Also known as “the international language”, Esperanto is a constructed language that has become popular in the international community as a language that many people can quickly gets to grips with. It is far easier to learn than English and, when developed in the 19th century, it was a means of communicating simply between people who did not speak the same natural languages.

Esperanto

Kohlandia has adopted Esperanto as one of its national languages as a gesture of hope that the peoples of the world can one day come together in peace and harmony. The language is not widely spoken on a daily basis within Kohlandia but many of its citizens have at least a passing knowledge of the language.

Latin

Latin has a long tradition in the British Isles, especially around the region that Kohlandia calls home. There is an ancient Roman fort and several Roman roads in the area surrounding Kohlandia; and Roman influence can still be felt on Kohlandian culture.

Kohlandia adopted Latin as one of its national languages as a mark of respect for the culture that eventually gave rise to this small nation; and also because of Queen Catherine’s fondness for the language. Latin is not widely spoken in Kohlandia on a daily basis but it does crop up in formal ceremonies and is also used regularly in Kohlandian media.
